OUR STORY

Rooted in Faith. Growing in Love. Sent in Hope.

Bridgeport United Methodist Church is rooted in a long and faithful Christian witness in the Bridgeport community—one that stretches back more than two centuries.

Methodism has been present in Bridgeport since the early 1800s, when circuit riders and local believers gathered for worship in homes, schoolhouses, and shared meeting spaces. Over time, Methodist Episcopal and Methodist Protestant congregations took shape, each nurturing faith, community, and service in a growing town. These congregations worshiped separately for many years, often meeting in modest spaces sustained by the dedication of lay leaders and pastors who believed deeply in the mission of the church.

In 1943, those two Methodist traditions—the First Methodist Episcopal Church and the Methodist Protestant Church—were united to form Bridgeport Methodist Church, a sign of shared purpose and renewed strength. A decade later, in 1953, the congregation dedicated its present sanctuary, made possible in part through the generosity of Bridgeport native and philanthropist Michael Late Benedum, whose lifelong faith and love for his hometown helped shape the church’s future.

The church continued to grow and adapt in the decades that followed. In 1968, with the formation of The United Methodist Church, Bridgeport Methodist Church became Bridgeport United Methodist Church and continues to be part of this global, connectional denomination committed to personal holiness, social holiness, and service in Christ’s name.

Another important chapter was added through the ministry at Johnson Avenue. Founded in 1955 as Bridgeport Evangelical United Brethren Church, that congregation became Johnson Avenue United Methodist Church in 1968. In 2017, it became a campus of Bridgeport United Methodist Church, continuing its legacy of neighborhood ministry, outreach, and worship.

Today, Bridgeport United Methodist Church is a multi-campus congregation, shaped by its past and oriented toward God’s future. Grounded in the Wesleyan tradition, we seek to make disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world, living out our calling as a Matthew 25 church—in ministry with and for the least, the last, the lonely, and the left out.

A new generation finding welcome and belonging in the ongoing life of the church.

Our story is still being written, as God continues to call us to faithful worship, compassionate service, and bold love in the heart of our community.
