WHAT WE BELIEVE
Rooted in Scripture. Centered on Grace. Shaped by Love.
Our Center: Jesus Christ
At Bridgeport United Methodist Church, our faith is centered on Jesus Christ.
We believe that Jesus reveals the heart of God to the world and invites us into a life shaped by love, mercy, forgiveness, and grace. Through his life, teachings, death, and resurrection, we see God’s desire to restore relationships, heal brokenness. In Christ, God brings new life where there has been loss or despair.
We believe in the Triune God—Father, Son, and Holy Spirit—who creates, redeems, and sustains all things. God’s grace reaches toward us before we ever seek it, meets us where we are, and continues to shape us as we grow in faith and love.
At the heart of Christian faith is grace—God’s gift, freely given. We believe salvation is not something we earn, but something we receive, as God draws us into new life through Christ and calls us to live as his disciples in the world.
The Bible is foundational to our life together. We read Scripture as a living witness to God’s work in the world, seeking to understand it faithfully, prayerfully, and in conversation with the community of faith. Through Scripture, the Holy Spirit continues to speak, challenge, comfort, and guide the church today.
Our Wesleyan Way of Being
As a United Methodist congregation, our faith is shaped by the Wesleyan tradition, rooted in the teachings and witness of John Wesley. This tradition emphasizes that God’s grace is not only something we believe in, but something we experience and live out over time.
We believe that God’s grace is active throughout our lives. God’s love reaches toward us before we are even aware of it, welcomes us into forgiveness and new life through Christ, and continues to shape us as we grow in faith. Salvation, in this understanding, is not a single moment but a lifelong journey of becoming more fully who God created us to be.
Our faith is nurtured through Scripture, informed by the wisdom of the Christian tradition, shaped by careful thinking and reflection, and tested in real life. We trust that God meets us not only in belief, but in experience—in worship, service, relationships, and daily living.
Because of this, we believe faith is meant to be lived. Following Jesus involves loving God and neighbor, seeking personal and social holiness, and participating in God’s work of healing and renewal in the world. Growth in faith is ongoing, and God is always at work within us, leading us toward deeper love, greater compassion, and lives shaped by grace.
Our Posture — Faith Seeking Understanding
At Bridgeport United Methodist Church, we believe faith is a journey—one that involves learning, questioning, wrestling, and growing over time. We do not expect people to have everything figured out before they belong. Instead, we trust that God meets us in honest searching and continues to shape us through grace.
We believe questions are not a sign of weak faith, but often a sign of faith taking root. Doubt, curiosity, and wonder are part of the Christian life, and we seek to create space where thoughtful conversation and deep listening are encouraged. We approach Scripture and theology with humility, trusting that God is always greater than our understanding.
As a community, we are united by our shared commitment to follow Jesus Christ, even as we continue to grow and learn together. While we may not all think the same way about every issue, we believe love, grace, and mutual respect are essential to life together in the church.
We believe belonging comes before certainty. All are welcome to worship, serve, learn, and grow here, as we seek to live faithfully and respond to God’s grace together.
An Invitation, Not a Test
Faith is not something we complete or master. It is something we grow into, step by step, through God’s grace and in the company of others.
At Bridgeport United Methodist Church, you do not need to have everything figured out to belong. Whether you are exploring faith for the first time, returning after time away, carrying questions or doubts, or seeking a church home, you are welcome here.
We invite you to join us in worship, conversation, service, and community as we seek to follow Christ together. Wherever you are on your journey, there is room for you to learn, to grow, and to discover how God’s grace is at work in your life.
We would be honored to walk with you as you explore faith, community, and life with God.
