MISSION AND OUTREACH

At Bridgeport United Methodist Church, mission is not something we do only on special occasions—it is how we seek to live our faith every day.

We believe that following Jesus means loving our neighbors in tangible ways, especially those who are struggling, overlooked, or in need of hope. As a Matthew 25 congregation, we seek to respond to human need with compassion, to work toward justice, and to build relationships that reflect God’s grace and mercy.

Through local partnerships, community outreach, and acts of service, we strive to bear witness to Christ’s love in both word and action.

Meeting Immediate Needs

We respond to basic and urgent needs in our community, including food insecurity, clothing, and essential household items. Through partnerships with local ministries and organizations, we help provide meals, groceries, and tangible assistance to neighbors facing hardship.

Our congregation regularly supports and serves alongside ministries such as Shepherd’s Corner, Friends Feeding Friends, Open Heart Ministries, and the Clarksburg Mission, offering both volunteer support and financial assistance as needs arise.

Walking Alongside Individuals and Families

Beyond short-term help, we believe in ministries that listen, accompany, and support people over time. Through relational and care-centered outreach, we seek to walk alongside families and individuals navigating foster care, economic stress, illness, or major life transitions.

This includes our burgeoning Family Advocacy Ministry, which supports foster and vulnerable families through Care Communities, as well as ministries of visitation, encouragement, and practical support that reflect Christ’s compassion and presence.

Recovery, Healing, and Hope

We recognize that many people carry hidden burdens, struggles, and wounds. Bridgeport UMC is committed to being a place where healing and restoration are possible.

Our Revive Recovery Ministry offers a Christ-centered, confidential space for individuals seeking support through life’s challenges, grounded in Scripture, community, and grace. We also host recovery groups that serve the wider community, offering meeting space and hospitality for those on the journey toward wholeness.

Care in Times of Crisis and Transition

In moments of illness, loss, or unexpected crisis, we seek to offer care that is both compassionate and practical. Ministries such as Buddy Bags at United Hospital Center provide support for families waiting with loved ones in critical care, while seasonal outreach efforts address needs during holidays and times of heightened vulnerability.

Through prayer, presence, and service, we strive to embody the love of Christ in difficult seasons.

Seasonal and Congregational Outreach

Throughout the year, our congregation participates in seasonal outreach efforts that engage people of all ages in service. These include Vacation Bible School, holiday food basket partnerships with the Salvation Army, Angel Tree gifts for children, and support for winter shelter ministries.

These opportunities invite the whole church—children, youth, adults, and families—to serve together and grow in faith through action.

Regional, Conference, and Global Mission

Our mission extends beyond Bridgeport through partnerships with United Methodist and community-based ministries across West Virginia and beyond. We support regional mission sites such as Tyrand Cooperative Ministries, House of the Carpenter, Upshur Parish House, Heart and Hand, and Scott’s Run Settlement House through work teams and financial giving.

Globally, we support the work of the United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR), responding to disasters and humanitarian crises around the world.

A Ministry of Welcome: Supporting Ukrainian Refugees

In response to the ongoing war in Ukraine, Bridgeport United Methodist Church has sought to live out Christ’s call to welcome the stranger and offer refuge to those in need.

Through partnerships with Cornerstone Ministries and the United States’ Uniting for Ukraine program, our congregation has helped sponsor and support Ukrainian refugees fleeing violence and displacement. This ministry has included providing housing in our Johnson Avenue parsonage, assisting families with food, clothing, transportation, schooling, medical care, and helping them navigate essential systems such as employment, insurance, and English language learning.

While this effort began in response to a specific global crisis, the relationships formed continue to shape our congregation’s understanding of hospitality, compassion, and global mission. This ministry reflects our belief that Christian love knows no borders, and that faith is lived not only through words, but through presence, generosity, and shared life.

Serving within the Life of the Church

Mission also happens within the church itself. Ministries such as our Lay Visitation Team and Live Stream Ministry help extend care, connection, and worship to those who may be homebound, hospitalized, or unable to attend in person.

These ministries remind us that outreach begins among us, as we care for one another as the body of Christ.

Getting Involved

Some outreach ministries offer ongoing volunteer opportunities, while others are seasonal or project-based. Whether you are looking to serve regularly, participate in a short-term effort, or support mission financially, there is a place for you.

To learn more or find a good fit, visit the Events & Calendar, explore individual ministry pages, or contact the Church Office. We would be glad to help you take your next step in serving.
