LIFE EVENTS
Baptisms, Weddings, Funerals, and Sacred Milestones
Some moments in life call for more than words. They invite prayer, presence, and the steady assurance that God is near.
At Bridgeport United Methodist Church, we believe the church exists to walk with people in life’s most meaningful seasons—times of great joy, times of deep loss, and moments of holy transition. Whether you are welcoming a child through baptism or responding to God’s grace through baptism at any age, celebrating a wedding, or grieving the death of a loved one, you do not have to navigate these moments alone.
Each of these occasions is sacred. We approach them with care, compassion, and reverence for God’s grace at work in your life. Wherever you are on your faith journey—whether you are a longtime member, new to the church, or simply seeking support—we are honored to listen, pray, and walk alongside you.
Baptism
Baptism is a sacred sign of God’s grace and love at work in our lives. Through water and the Holy Spirit, baptism marks the beginning of our life in Christ and our belonging in the community of faith.
At Bridgeport United Methodist Church, we joyfully celebrate baptism for people of all ages—infants, children, youth, and adults. Whether baptism takes place at the beginning of life or later in response to God’s call, we believe it is always God’s gracious action first. Baptism is not something we earn, but a gift we receive.
For infants and young children, baptism is a promise: a promise of God’s unfailing love, and a promise made by parents, caregivers, and the church to nurture a child in faith. For youth and adults, baptism may come as a moment of affirmation, commitment, or new beginning—an outward sign of God’s grace already at work in their lives.
If you are considering baptism for yourself or for your child, we invite you to begin with a conversation. Our pastors will listen to your story, answer questions, and walk with you as you discern this step of faith. Wherever you are on your journey, baptism is a moment of grace, welcome, and belonging.
Weddings
Christian marriage is a sacred covenant, celebrated within the life of the church and grounded in God’s love and faithfulness. At Bridgeport United Methodist Church, weddings are understood as services of worship, where couples make their vows before God and are surrounded by the prayers and support of the Christian community.
Because of this, weddings at Bridgeport UMC are ordinarily celebrated for members of the congregation or for couples who have an established relationship with the church. We believe marriage is not only a personal commitment, but a covenant nurtured within a community of faith.
Couples seeking to be married at Bridgeport UMC are invited to work closely with the pastor assigned to their wedding to plan a service that reflects the Christian understanding of marriage. Premarital counseling is required for all weddings and is an important part of preparing for a lifelong covenant rooted in faith, communication, and grace.
Funerals and Memorial Services
Service of Death and Resurrection
In times of loss and grief, the church bears witness to the hope we have in Jesus Christ. Funerals and memorial services—often called a Service of Death and Resurrection—are acts of worship in which we commend the one who has died to God’s loving care, give thanks for their life, and surround one another with prayer, Scripture, and hope.
At Bridgeport United Methodist Church, we seek to walk with families during these tender moments with compassion, dignity, and care. Whether the person who has died was a longtime member of the church or had a connection to our congregation through family or friendship, we approach each service prayerfully and pastorally, honoring both the individual and those who grieve.
Our pastors work closely with families to plan services that reflect Christian faith, speak honestly about grief, and proclaim God’s promise of resurrection and new life. When helpful, we also work collaboratively with funeral homes to help coordinate arrangements, so that families may focus on remembering and honoring their loved one.
If you are facing the death of a loved one, please know that you do not have to walk this path alone. The church is here to listen, to pray, and to offer care in the midst of sorrow and loss.
How to Begin
