Children’s Musical Forecasts 100% Chance of ‘Fun’

The Jubilate Singers of Bridgeport United Methodist Church will present “100% Chance of Rain,” a musical about Noah’s ark and the flood, on Saturday, March 29, at 6:15 p.m., and Sunday, March 30, at 9:30 a.m. and 6:15 p.m., in the Church’s Fellowship Hall. Admission is free. The public is invited to attend.

Written by Walter Horsley and adapted by Thomas Schoffler, a former chorister at Bridgeport UMC who is now professor of theater at West Virginia Wesleyan, this musical production teaches children about Noah, “the Admirable Admiral,” as a man who listened and obeyed God. It also teaches them how God loves and cares for all his children and how he made a covenant with them to never flood the earth again. Children will portray the many different animals that boarded the ark – raccoons, wolves, pigs, ladybugs, chickens, rabbits, lions, zebras, leopards, butterflies, frogs, and many others.

This year marks the third time Bridgeport UMC has performed this musical in 15 years.  The set pieces and costumes were made by the parents and grandparents of children from the 1993 original performance. A large ark, constructed by Clyde Strother Neil Brake, Henry Shockey, and Charlie Roberts, fills the stage with three decks and portholes for the animals to look out. A giant rainbow appears at the end of the play with everyone rejoicing in God’s love for all of His creation. Costumes were designed by church members Alice Brake, Kathy Miller, Katrina West, Arlene Decker, Anna Groves, Andrea Alfred, Nancy Brown, Patty Ashcraft, Jean Coffindaffer, Evelyn Proud, and Patty Roberts.

“100% Chance of Rain” is directed by Jenny Lawson, children’s choir director at Bridgeport UMC.
