Nationally endorsed Conn-Selmer artist, David Wells, will perform in concert on Saturday, October 13, at 6:15 p.m., at Bridgeport United Methodist Church. Admission is free. The public is invited to attend.
Wells was born into a large, musical family in Vienna, West Virginia. Early in life, Wells moved to Dallas, Texas, where he grew up with his four sisters and two brothers. Their father, an ordained minister, encouraged all of them to pursue their musical talents. At the age of 9, Wells was drawn to the smooth, soulful sounds of the flugelhorn, and began learning the instrument.
While growing up, Wells received private lessons from some of the most well-known trumpet instructors in the nation. His first professional performing experience came at the age of 13, when he played on a record for Miss West Virginia, Debbie Davis, who went on to compete for the 1980 Miss America title. By the age of 14, he began to dream of a career in music. With his family’s encouragement, Wells began to diligently prepare and pursue excellence with his instrument and majored in music at a university in Texas. His dream was to become an instrumental soloist who could share his gift with the rest of the world.
“My musical influences have been artists like Louie Armstrong, Herb Albert and the Tijuana Brass, Jim Brickman, John Tesh and Yanni. The music of these musicians connects with the audiences on an intimate level. It is my desire to reach out and touch the listen’s heart and soul. Ultimately, it is that connection with the listener that defines a great artist,” said Wells.
After several years of gigging on the east coast, Wells released his debut record, “The Day Of…”, a collection of original instrumental pieces and covers of existing works from other artists. In the wake of 9-11, Wells made arrangements to distribute copies of “The Day Of…” to rescue and cleanup workers at Ground Zero. His motivation was to provide some measure of comfort to those left with the monumental task of clearing the site.
Since that time, Wells has released five additional CDs, and one compilation disc. In addition to his vigorous traveling schedule, Wells has also performed at many sporting and government events, including appearances on ESPN2 and many local and regional television networks. His release in 2006 of “More Love More Power” brought national acclaim on smooth jazz radio and reached #13 on the R&R indicators.
